Mim's research on Sophie Calle

SOPHIE CALLE
(Born 1953)

Sophie Calle is a French writer, photographer, installation artist and conceptual artist. Her works illustrates human natural behavior which identify each person's identity. She observes strangers and people to examine their intimacy. Sophie Calle portrays her works by photography through typology and her own writing from her own observation for example,

The shadow
She was followed by a detective, hired by her mother, to take photograph of her. It was in Calle's word 'to provide photographic evidence of my own existence'. Throughout the day she also documented the reversed version, in her own hand writing, the experiences.

Bling Series
She interviewed blind people who were born blind, to define 'beauty'. Their response were shown by photographic interpretation of their ideas with writings and the interviewees portrait.

The sleepers
Calle invited friends, neighbors and strangers on her bed and document them sleeping. She provide her documentary in a series of photos, 176 photograph with text. This work or her shows a typology of people's reaction doing different things in the same surrounding using the same objects.

Take care of yourself
Calle was dumped by her boyfriend with a letter. She distributed the letter to women and photograph their reaction. She also portray this documentation is a form of typology.

From my own analysis of Calle's work, she examine people's behavior through typology. In which typology is a series of picture showing similar picture but each have its own narratives. From typology, it shows the obvious reaction of each person in the space they were set in differently. For example, Take care of yourself, these women read a sad letter which it is obviously sad, by the use of typology it differentiate more than 'sad'. It shows the identity of each person of their reaction through this 'sad' letter.

How did Sophie Calle trigger imagination?
- Mixed image and text to provoke the kind of intense emotional response.
- Her most extraordinary work addresses ordinary human intendicies,
- Introduce non verbal response to make things easier, photography of human obvious reactions. (Where Calle claims that it is the 'international language' that every country understands, a sign language.)

  1. The case study seems quite superficial in comparison to the rest of the work, that has much more depth. I believe this part took the role of an inspiration rather than a case study, which would have required the depiction of the piece of study into drawings/diagrams that help understanding ints effects and how these are generated, so please be aware of that in the future.
Otherwise, I think there is a very good understanding of the artist's intentions and techniques for generating experiences reflected on your texts.
