Sky's Documentation and Post-Analysis on 'Proxy'

The image and the only image that we can see while in the installation, the tree. Surroundings are covered with darkness, giving people a high focus sight on the only light area.

After turned the lights on, you can see a clear differences between the two, the area and atmosphere completely changes. While turn on the light, the site is just cover by a big mess of black materials, however when all the lights are off the atmosphere of the installation suddenly feel intense.

This video is taken while people walked into the installation, the only view we all could see is the image of the tree, again.

Responses

Some people who went into the tiny narrow gap expressed and mutter their feelings out:

"Why so small"
"It's hard to walk"
"Hot and humid"
"Creepy"

Sky's Installation Drawings: 'Proxy'

My solution on the decision of choosing the site for installation and installation idea mostly came from how I looked eroticism towards architecture. Firstly started from the word ‘kissing’ architecture that I understand that it is the contact of the surfaces, not only by physically touched but also by many other different medias too. I understand erotic in the way of the attractive feeling towards something. In my term it’s comparable to gloomy mysterious corner that seems to pull us into it. This specific attraction creates a feeling of ‘eagerness’ to ‘embrace’ it.

My installation would take place somewhere that have a distinctive texture for the people to touched, ‘embrace’, it. Thus my choice will be on the third floor at faculty of architecture, where one side of the wall is made of bricks created a unique texture from any other plain-cemented walls. So using the advantages of the site efficiently.

By embracing the architecture, in the dark, can alter the surrounding atmosphere. Giving the idea of creating an artificial environment from what you see, but not next to you, proxy.

The only image that you can see from the site is the huge tree outside the building, so extracting every element from the tree and transport them into the installation have to be very precise. This will create an artificial atmosphere within the installation itself.

The style of installation would be somewhat making the people interacts to the installation directly, so every sense would have to be considering in this work. The walking path into my installation is forced to walk along the texture wall, narrowing the path down, in order to make the people automatically sense the texture.

All the chairs that are in messed in the site are used as a barrier to block the circulation, and vision. Covered by large black clothes, giving a sense of ‘void’ as the entire area is replaced by darkness, from the surrounding and also artificial materials that are used for installation. Why paint them in black? Since the site is small, and require for the people to walk in and out, the endless perspective vision will be important.

When enter the installation, people will feel strangely intense, and focus only on the image of the tree outside. When continued walking, people will hear a sound of dried leaves on the ground when stepped on constantly, while embracing a wooden-like texture on the wall. The atmosphere around that person will slowly changes, due to the time that the person stayed in the installation. In the end, they will experience proxy of the tree surrounding them.

Material placement on the site which will give a similar sound and texture of the tree.

The materials that are used in the installation includes black sprayed foam, fake dried branches, black clothes and chairs.

The circulation of the people will be force to only one way path, which is the stairs from second floor of the building. This is because to keep the proxy image as secret as possible, creating more effectiveness of the installation.

Understanding the Meaning

Through all the researches and analyzing of the chosen artist, that would actually benefit and support my idea of installation, so now I will explained what is my meaning of 'Erotic', giving a clear image on what my installation will look like.

"In my understanding of Erotic is a feeling of attraction, some certain and specific attractive feelings. Thus Erotic is about an attractive feeling, which can pull us into the dark mysterious atmosphere, causing an 'eagerness' to 'embrace' them, to feel them, to touch them, to be one with them".

As my Erotic seems to be Embracing, so I analyzed each human body parts and senses that can possibly be embracing to the surroundings.

Vision: an experiencing of seeing something, illusion or images.
Physical: feeling something relating to your body parts, involving bodily contact or activity.
Taste: the sensation of flavor perceived in the mouth when contact with surface or substances.
Scent: a distinctive smell, maybe pleasant or unpleasant.

Site Analysis

The site choosing is important, as the site should consist of something that have a texture for the people to feel, and the area can not be large, since I want people to 'embrace' the area, a limited space is required.

3RD FLOOR, FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE

This site is chosen because of its limited size, plus the inconstant and rough texture on the wall of bricks.

Outside Area

The site is granted with the extended floor outside the balcony, in which can be added more effects on the installation, if needed.

Rewinding to Pipilotti Rist, on how her installation changes the atmosphere of the area, plus combining with the texture feeling of El Anatsui art works which related to 'embracing' leads to the installation idea.

When touched the texture the atmosphere will be different, this have to occurs in the dark time, where people are blinded by darkness. Thus the people will be forced into the limited narrow gap, which will automatically force to touch the texture of the wall.

The certain atmosphere that will create a totally different environment have to be carefully and precisely chosen.

Concept Idea

proxy |ˈpräksē|noun ( pl. proxies )the authority to represent someone else, esp. in voting: they may register to vote by proxy .• a person authorized to act on behalf of another.• a document authorizing a person to vote on another's behalf.a figure that can be used to represent the value of something in a calculation: the use of a US wealth measure as a proxy for the true worldwide measure.

Bringing the atmosphere from the outside view, the tree (where you could not reach from the site), to the installation by creating an artificial surrounding environment, or simply said 'proxy'.

Site relation to the tree

Tree Mapping Experience

To create an environment that will be very similar to the real atmosphere I have to extract every elements of the tree, and analyze them deeply in detail.

Every side of the site should be modified into an artificial environment that are extracted from the tree. The diagram will stimulate how each part of the site, walls and ground, will represent which elements.

It is a must that surrounding will be all dark, in order to make the installation most effective, so people will intensely focus on the image of the tree outside of the building.

Sky's Research on Pipilotti Rist and El Anatsui

Pipilotto Rist

Pipilotti Rist was born in 1962 in Grabs, Sankt Gallen, Switzerland. Her works generally treated issues related to 'gender', 'sexuality' and the 'human body'. She will indicates each people various experiences, happy, sad or angry. For instances:

An Eyeball Massage

The installation is about putting people inside a huge room, the tall walls are covered with projections of oversized images, videos and audios. People are needed to stay in the room and absorbs the atmosphere that alters when every projections changes. This creates a variety of experiences to the viewers.

Diagraming how each environment can effectively alters people's feelings and actions. As in the picture, all three scenarios are different, with different people's actions and experiences.

Pour Your Body Out

This installation takes place at Museum of Modern Art, using all 7354 cubic meters of atrium. Similar to some of her projects, the projection videos are taken from ant eye view, giving a sense of 'enlarging' to the surroundings for the people inside the area. Meanwhile, the audiences will automatically imagined that their body had been compressed into a tiny size while they are staying in the installation.

El Anatsui

El Anatsui was born in 1944, is a Ghanian sculptor, mostly active in Nigeria. He, as a sculptor, uses a recycle-like materials to create his art work. The medias used are mostly woods, water bottles, metal cans, clays, aluminum. All of his works are produced in an amazingly enormous size, here are one of the bests:

Gravity and Grace

The work is created using aluminum plates and liquor bottles which are joined, attached by copper wires. The works is about transformation, as El Anatsui said it himself, since the sculpture can be changed differently due to the distance of the viewers. Moreover, by the huge size of his work, it can also described as a large metal curtains.

Sky - Erotic Architecture Photography

The hole between stair case at Chulalongkorn University Museum - The deep hole attracts attention towards it, seems like its pulling us in. Creating direction towards the very ground floor, giving me curiousness in the term of eroticism.

A view from bottom to top of BACC center atrium - The curvature which seems to overlapping each other multiple amount of times, giving the feeling of endlessness to its destination.

Top floor ceiling at Siam Paragon - The lighting enhanced the feeling of 'curvature' all around the photograph . These curves to me represents human body parts which is so flexible and have no 'angles' in them.

4th floor at BACC - The forms of the pointed peak is so weird and unique, comparing to many things that I have ever seen before. Surrounded by many circular rhythm, seems as if the pointed peak is pulling surroundings into it.
