Project 4: Erotic Fields

Site Analysis
There are many defunct, abandoned shophouses. Young people doesn’t want to live in it anymore, while the old still does. By introducing these programs into the shophouse is for to revive the shophouse for it to be able to function again at full capacity of it’s potential. Originally the building itself only have dual function, as a resident and a shop but there are still surplus capacities waiting to be used.

Too revive it, the shophouse itself will contain programs that are normally not found in it. By introducing multi-functionality, the shophouse becomes a system of shifting where the programs activates different time of the day.

The system is to sequence the programs activate at different times of the day, simultaneously for each floor. The building becomes more autonomous. The system would consist of human powered shifts and automatic shifts.
Map of Yaowarat

Analysis of 5 sois of Yaowarat to extract behavioral pattern in the duality of the shophouses. Photos were taken at designated sois from 9am-13pm and at 11pm.

The photos are condensed into smaller sets of photos located in each of the 5 sois to compare different time of the day of the shophouses.
Observation translated into plan and section diagrams. The diagrams are to display the shophouse behavior more clearly.
Proposals of the of how it can transform into multi-functional shophouse from normal dual program shophouse.

BUDDY site research: Tessabaan songkrog road

Jaa's site research : shophouses along choaphraya river

My selected site is shophouse aside of chaophraya river, the reason i chose this site is to research about how people live before, during, and after the big flood in 2011. (as shown on diagrams)
I've founded that even Chophraya river have been the river of life since the very beginning of bangkok until present days. Thus, traditional thai lifestyle have been wrapped over with commercialise facade, instead of housing or house boat like earlier days. nowadays we mostly see hotels, condominiums, and restaurants. my first selected site was wang-lang pier. there are market, restaurant, street vendor, residential and impotent hospital on the area. This research leading me to an idea of Amphibian shophouse that can survive boat dry and wet climate.

FON's site research : Siam Square

Bambi's site research: "Sukhumvit soi 39"

The conceptual aspects of my idea of eroticism that I have been developing over the previous projects consists of gradual change and the experience itself being rare. Both of those involve around the element of transition and changes over "time", which therefore becomes the main focus of my site analysis.

From the study of the site's history, there is clearly evidence of transition within the site over the course of time, as well as its adjacent buildings. The surrounding buildings i.e. The Emporium and BTS Promphong also play huge roles in the increase of the site's population and converting the area into a centre of commerce and commute. This relationship between the shopping mall and sky train with the site is "commensalism"

Another change in time is the daily routine. By observing the activity of the shophouses and their surroundings, I have found particular patterns of work shifts, for example, the food vendors' morning shifts and sumaru taxis customer target time.

One unexpected finding that also contributes to the erotics of the site is its "ambiguity". Next to Sukhumvit soi 39, on the other side of the shophouses is a small, anonymous soi. Along with the inexistence of soi 37, makes the soi much more mysterious. When I asked the people in and around the site I got numerous answers. Only locals within a small scope within the site and had been there for over 10 years gave the same answer, that it is a private road.

Mew's site research :"Yowarach, soi mungkorn"

SELECTED AREA FROM YOWARACH ROAD

WHY ???

Shophouse is the traditional house of Chinese which in later they move to Thailand for work and living. Those chinese brought the idea of shophouse to Thailand and selected area that they want which is Yowarach. After that more chinese came from china and spread their traditional house to thai so thai start to created their own shophouse and later mixed together with chinese style.

Research on Site

Each color dedicate different job and shop that happened in the selected area
However, when i research deeply on my site what i found is the inner layer of this site was living space and the outer was for only commercial.
