Kanoon's proposal: Car Hospital (the Chaos Container)

 

From site analysis, the erotic quality of the site, Chiangkong is that the "Overwhelming Chaos" within the area. As design objective to keep this quality, I came up with the Design program: Car Hospital

The Car Hospital consists of 3 main units,

Front Unit

Main objective of designing Front Unit's facade is to "contain chaos" and keep it within the space inside (hospital units). This facade is aimed to create a shock space when observers get inside.

The facade's design is derived from Shrine (modernized) as to achieve one of the objective is to "bring back the origin" from the original Chiangkong Shrine in Talad Noi and also acted as shedding device.

Clinic Units

Similar to Human's Hospital, Car Hospital also consists of many units operations.

• Bodywork
• Engine system
• Electrical system
• Audio and Sound
• Interior
• Brake and Suspensions

which each units required different tools, different spaces, for example, Bodywork unit requires a paint booth, also Engine system Unit and Brake&Suspensions Unit need car lifts within the units.

 

 

 The erotic quality of the space is derived from my previous project, Erotic Art Installation, as to give the feeling of overwhelmed by being lock in the narrow space and feeling a lot of things from above.

 

Parking Unit

to store fixed cars and hand over them to customers afterward. This unit requires technical parking system which is adapted to fit in the existing shophouse structure (check this link for more information).

Kanoon’s shophouse research: General Shophouse and Customization

Started from a study of general form of shophouse from laws and policy

And I studied my family’s shophouse at Minburi as an example,

Then I visualized the information by giving a main character and its background story, as to be seen in the animation.

1^st floor: business area (restaurant) and extended 3m at the back of the shophouse as kitchen

2^nd floor/mezzanine: extended mezzanine full floor and uses it as storage for the business

3^rd floor: family’s living area (private)

4^th floor: built room partitions for bedrooms and bathroom

Roof-deck: still no-use but can be provided for more usages

During construction (in day-light)

Installation pin-up time (around 7pm)

For the aspect of being a shocked-space was quite failed since some of the people there have already seen my project while it was under construction (and by some out of planned event) and I wish participants to be more excited to go though the space but at least, paper cub phones seemed to do their job well in bringing the ‘nostalgia joy’ of childhood moment. This was proven since I was installing, people who were passing by usually did a reaction like ‘wow, can I play with this?’ and even trying to find the right cups for each pair. This was why, during the installation pin-up, while I told nothing; some of the participants actually knew and did the job (which is interesting reactions! I did not expect this). After everyone knows the meaning of white and red strings, they almost ignored the cups with red strings and focused on finding white-string cups and their pairs instead. Aj.A pointed this out that I should concentrate more on sounds I wanted participants to listen and the meaning behind having 2 separated areas.

     This project may still not the best one, but, as this installation can made participants enjoy. It has already achieved one of my objectives.

To me, erotic has a very broad meaning not only about sexual like most of people (or even I at the beginning) think. Everyone defines the meaning of Erotic differently depends on personality and experiences, for example I find Whispering is very sensual. It is not only evoke me a hearing sense, but other senses and memory as well, while others people may not feel the same way as me. To explain further, something erotic may strongly evokes your senses at the same time also pictures imagination in your head and feeling you have toward it.

My project seems to mainly about hearing sense, but actually it is also about sight and touch led to childhood memory (plus, some allurement like toys have toward kids). Since I mentioned erotic is about senses ‘to recall your memory and feeling you have toward it’, it is pretty similar to the meaning of ‘relationship’. Listening to each other (you and architecture) help you to understand and improve relationship more :D
