Peachy's shophouse research: "Facade Vs. Circulation"

I study and research about different kinds of thing that people usually put on the facade of the shophouse. Because of these things ( such as steel cage and huge advertise board) effect on ventilation and sun light going inside which can change the activities inside the shophouse.

First, I research on the general shophouse characteristic from the original chinese
and the shophouse in Bangkok.

After researching, I found that shophouse in Bangkok is changed a a lot in term of tropical architecture. There is no air well which make the shophouse good in ventilation in very dense and enclosure like that and there is no 5-foot way like in China. The only that remains the same is the function of it.
Ground floor is for public activity (shop) and upper floor is a residential space (house). The most interesting point for me is the added things on facade which that the original one doesn't have.

To dig deeper on this topic I  have to observe more.

To see the relationship between outside and in side the facade, I set 2 topic to look at which are the ventilation and amount of sunlight that can go inside. For example, if there is advertise board that cover all of the facade (no light, no wind) behind that could be staircase or hallway. If there is CDU of air condition+windows(normally have) it could be bedroom or living room. The position of staircase can indicate the zoning of room.

Peachy's documentation and post-analysis on "SQUEEZE"

Preparing the installation

Light Observation before real installation
"Which color creep you out the most?"
Green light
Red light

The result is green color from 10 viewers. (green= 7 people, red= 3 people)

Documentation during the presentation

Audio track (updated from the fourth development) more spooky! more noisy!

the installation

A.Bea was going inside.

She was  inside.

You can hear the real squeezing sound (at 3-4 sec) between your body and balloons when you pass through the installation.

Conclusion
Because of electricity problem, I decide to take off the light and get ready to present on Friday because I think SQUEEZE still performs as I want...
The participants (ajarns and friends) passed through the balloon around 10-20 sec. which what I guess and want it to be. They get fear feeling, hold the breath during get in, sigh after passing and have physical touch without denying. The balloons squeeze them inside also they squeeze balloons and make annoying noise. Unexpectedly, the balloons keep blowup by themselves without any touch. That's make them more scary and make the participants get more pressure. One of the participants loves the sound of explosion. So, he hardly squeezed on balloons and made them blasted. She is scared of the darkness and black balloons but not the balloon itself. It is pretty much successful on this installation. I get the feedback from participants as i guessed it before.
In the other hand, if the light that I have expected at first is can be used, it might be more precious to touch and get more sense of tactility? which is kind of invert to my first thought that I want it to be more spooky by lighting.

Erotic is a sensual response to something. What arouse your senses is erotic! It can be done by touching, hearing, seeing, smelling and tasting. People might have different feeling of erotic. Some might be terrified, satisfied, excited, desired, curious, confused, painful, etc. It is depended on what situation you are in. Terrifying is the intended effect of my tactile installation to demonstrate the dark side of erotism. It creeps people out by erotic. Black balloons with tiny spaces between each column create the pressure that forcing you and you can't escape from it. It's painful when you hurt the sound of rubbing balloon. When you pass through it, your touching and hearing sense is fully awaken because you can't see anything in the dark. It has 2 actions which both you squeeze balloons and balloons squeeze you.

Peachy's installation development: "SQUEEZE"

After researching artists, I came up with the concept of "intimacy tactility". First, I did the research on texture materials which can create pleasant or unpleasant feeling. For the site, It should be narrow enough and not too high like a perfect box for people to walk though.

Site
The first chosen site ( too high)
The final chosen site

Materials
The list of material that can be used for the installation which give the sense of touching.
It can be sponge, fur, fabric, microfiber and rubber.

Tactile analysis shows the characteristics of pleasant and unpleasant materials and the conjecture feeling when people have physical touch with those objects.

Work Development

First conceptual design is to make the connection between architecture and human body. I want people to feel like they walk inside the body. The general concept comes from Ernesto Neto which using stretchy fabric filled with objects. I list the weighings based on different feeling when you squeeze it through bag. People can smell or lick it if it's snack. But it is too literal.

From the previous one, I have changed the objective, walking inside me, to something not too literal that people can clearly see what exactly it is. This one keep the main concept on Abramovic's. It has to make pressure on people and make them decide what they gonna do.
So, I began to design the space which force people to touch my installation without refusing.

First development: plan to mix materials with both pleasant and unpleasant on the very thick form board to make the viewers make harder decision "which side they should face."

Second development: Begin to make a mock-up by filling up the space with balloon, looked more fun than fear that I want it to be because of their colors. I have to pick only one color. The ceiling is too high. So, I need to find new place.

Third development: It is at the 4th floor walkway which decide to fill it up with floating balloon from the ground and hanging down the non-float one. I have 3 choices of balloon color in my mind; red=red blood cell, black=black hole, white=cloud.

Fourth Development: adding lighting and sound effect to create more fear. I chose black color because I want people not see clearly what's in front of them and to make them lost in the balloon jungle.

SQUEEZE

My installation, SQUEEZE, is inspired by Marina Abramovic's “Imponderabilia” which the artist performed with Ulay (her partner for thirteen years). Her work tries to explore the relationship between the physical body and architecture. They were naked, facing each other and acted like the columns of an entrance, making people pass though them and make decision on which way to face. They want to create a complex situation of endurance, in which using their body performed in extreme intimacy with the architectural element, the column. There is also some work from Ernesto Neto who are the master of 'experience sculpture'. He has explored the use of stretchy material such as Lycra, nylon or cotton which can make the organic structure itself to awake or arouse people senses. The audiences can touch, poke, smell, or physical touch. The last one is Cathrine Worel who did the “Braille” which is touch based language. The viewers can leave the reading traces and creating visible histories of transgressive intimacy.
Referencing Abramovic's, Neto's and Worel's work, is to create the installation interaction between people and space through sensual intimate tactility that can leave the traces of the interaction too. I select the site by the width which should be narrow enough to create the pressure and the ceiling should not be too high. The chosen site is the walkway on the fourth floor behind Inda studio. This walkway is usually used by teachers to go down by the elevator or to go to their rooms. The installation forces them to pass through with out any alternative route. I prefer to use balloons as the medium of my installation. There are several reasons. First, it's stretchy material that can please excite or terrify. Second, it can fill up the space. Third, it's available in many shapes and colors. The installation is columns of balloons hanging down from the ceiling and adhere them on the ground. I chose to present the installation at the evening, then decide to use black balloon to create scary ambience. I added sound of rubbing and exploding balloon and have a horror theme song as its background. The light is placed on the floor to make it glow under balloons. It requires people to contact intimately with the balloons surfaces as they pass through.

Peachy's research on Marina Abramovic, Ernesto Neto, Cathrine Worel

Marina Abramovic
"Impoderabilia"
For this performance, the Imponderabilia in 1997, performed with her partner, Ulay. They are naked in the main entrance facing each other to act like columns. The reason is to create the complex situation of endurance which perform in extreme intimacy to make audiences choose to face one of them.

- Concerning about how the self relates to space translated into performance
- Explore the relationship between physical body
  and architecture
- Create pressure and force people to touch their bodies

Ernesto Neto
"The Edge Of the World"
Stretchy tube
Weighting membrane
Inside the installation

"There is always an edge between one thing and another - a membrane"

His work is about experience sculpture which live above all in the tension between their spatial presence and the detailed texture of their surfaces. The visitors can walk through, touch, smell, lounge and bath! in Neto's installation.
The materials that he uses are stretchy fabrics such as Lycra, nylon, tulle, cotton or net. The water drop shape is filled with different spices to make a labyrinth for the senses. Material is used to make organic structure by itself.
- tactility with stretchy materials
- awaken people senses ( seeing, touching, smelling, tasting)

Cathrine Worel

"Braille"
"I Really Want You to Like Me" Candy dot

Detail of "I Really Want You to Like Me"

Cathrine casts plaster from her own body parts such as finger tips, teeth and nipples as nodes to form words and sentences. For the candy dot, she uses her own saliva to adhere them on the wall, daring visitors partake in a sweet kiss when they read these works.
- Let the viewers interact with and activate the pieces though touch, their reading leaving trace, creating visible histories of transgressive intimacy.
- touch-based language
- conflict relationship between symbols based work, poetics and the carnal body
- feminist art of examining the body

Peachy's teaser : SQUEEZE

Site: the 4th floor walk way behind Inda studio

The work of Peachy - Pitchanee Sae tung

This is at Rama8 Bridge. What erotic for me is the contrasting between the pylon that give feeling of strength and have power over you and the cables which is kind of flexible and have tension like a guitar strings that you want to play with it. Those cables also lead your eyes to the center (the focus point).

This is also from Rama8 Bridge but different view. This is the view from "looking up". The action of looking up for me means  something erotic like... you are looking up under something.
It's sort of sneaky.

This picture is taken at Skywalk Sathorn. It has the same concept of the above one but it's more like the "result". When you looking up, you will see this(the skywalk).

The last one is BTS rail. It is the interaction between elements which have same material(concrete). It shows the sense of touching each other. The left one illustrates the feeling of "stabbing, poking, punching" for me.
