Sky's Proposal: Modular Proxy Alley

Po's proposal: "Khaosan Muay Thai Gym"

The first plate shows the normal position of the shophouse. Where the function of the shophouse is the Muay Thai gym. There are two shophouses opposite of each other but of the same function. The opposite shophouse are different in material to give a different atmosphere, where one is more modern, steel and glass, and the other is more conservative, wooden material. This is to aim for a completely different targets, local and foreigner, or to open up choices for the user.

The second plate shows the other function of a shophouse, since both shophouses have the same function, the way to increase the interaction between both gyms, is to conduct an event between both gym, a fight. But as the limitation in space of the site, Khaosan road, therefore the shophouse itself transform to a arena that provide a space for people to come to see the match. The facade transform and the function of the shophouse totally transform. The space inside the shpoouse now become unavailable since their is no need to use it during the match, and only become the space supporting the arena and the fight. The two shophouse connected to form one space, taking up the road as well, then everything around it transform as well, street vendors would form around the arena only at the curtain time.

The two plate composition with a similar way so that when it is on top of another, it will show a very clear image of the transformation, creating a comparison of the two posture of the shophouse.

Jaa's proposal amphibian shophouse

This project is focusing on inventing new typology of shophouse structure in order to deal with flooding problem. By attaching new moveable/floatable system as shown on my master axon.  Well, according to erotic theme, the advantage of floating water effectively to the space inside shophouse, varies height of platform also separating the space as well. The occupants will experiencing the amphibian shophouse by jump around, climbing the little over height platform, and feel the motion of water just like when you in a boat. Most importantly, uncoated structure provided the idea, true love of building materials, from my installation concept ‘feel me’. All exiting old columns, adding beams are unhidden. There will be humidity problem from water as well but it’s solving by both facades that are well ventilation and sunlight explosion. You will touch the feeling from nature in contrasting with mechanism and building materials. The site is Chaophraya riverside (project4). However, if in 50 years Bangkok is totally flooded, the newbie amphibian column could be attached to any shophouse as well but for now it would be better to try along riverside.

Thu Tha's proposal: "The Transforming Scaffoldings"

First few Ideas

These are the first few ideas of how I want to transform the space. The first idea is to make the advertising electric facades. To be able to change during the day and night. The second idea is to have a skywalk that merge with the shophouse so that street vender and shophouse could have interactions and can benefit both by bringing customers to both activities.

Scaffoldings Ideas

Later, the idea of merging skywalk and the shophouse transform into scaffoldings. This relate to the concept of impermanence where the scaffoldings appear during the night and gone during the day.

After that, I developed a system where the facades are actually the bamboo scaffoldings which can be setting up easily by pulling them out.

You can see the way the scaffoldings changes between day and night. During the day, the scaffoldings act as shelter for the street vendors. Later during the late evening, the scaffoldings changes into an extend space from the shophouse where people could sit and drink from the night bar in the shophouse.

NONAE's proposal: "VALUE OF INTIMACY"

VALUE OF INTIMACY

This project is to centralize and integrate the network of gold trade into metaphorical shophouse. The structure is assembled from 7 positive spaces inside the existing shophouses on Sunthorn Gosa Road, which are operated by goldsmiths, pawnbrokers and pawn ticket purchasers. Also using the advantage of shophouse’s structure that provides utilitarian space at the very top of the shophouse to be a medium of the network. The criteria of the chosen structures based on the typology of the arrangement along with the placement of the program inside of shophouses. Extracting the virtual value of programs that embed into specific shophouse and inserting the intimated layers that define and determine the characteristics of new experimental network.

K's proposal: View Changer

The view and image you get from the facade are different according to where you are and what angle you're looking to the shophouses. People inside will have to spend time inside absorbing the space and enjoying the view of people outside. You will also see the inside program in only some particular area, and again it's all according to where you are at. Basically, you will see the building differently according to your position, your view will change.  I tried to connect the outside to the added facade, and connect the added facade to the shophouses.
