The Cave Man Studio

The confounding expectation that place with the space and design are my erotic definition. It has a lots of transition that change the expectation which is in the specific moment of time. The ordinary facade vs. curve structure space, small space vs. huge space, curvy structure vs. space on the curvy structure, close space vs. opening are the confounding expectation that happens in this shophouse. Also with the sound that come out to the neighborhood but cannot recognize where it is from because all the facade are the same. It is a tricky play that play with the expectation of human.

All the construction are look into joint and the modular components

There are 3 types; first is column, second are short beam, and third is long beam.

The construction starts from the base by connect the joint to the base. ( There is a joint on the base too)

When the structure is done, the floor can be put on.

It can build as many floor as you want because it is a modular joint!

The floor can be taken out to show structure too. All the stair and floor are also modular and adjustable. So the model can be use for the further analysis and design.

Saan's shophouse research " circulations vs spaces"

 

This video include the codes and the construction technique coming from the research and site visiting.

The point of research is coming from the structure technique which a beam and column structure. It reminds me to the free plan of Le Corbusier's technique. The free plan are the most impact thing that does with the circulation as a wall the change the circulation.

After the model making is done.  The adjustable stairs show some interesting point between the circulation and the non-circulation spaces. As the normal shop house, there are 2 things combining together which is shop and house.

The shop circulation should be like many department store that they try to create the circulation which covers all of their products. However, for the house, people would make the house as an access point and easily to reach. It must concern on the privacy (safety, interruption, and etc.) So it is interesting that the circulation is changed by the purpose of the building.

And some place that the context around the space which affect the shophouse might show the different between the room arrangement too (change the circulation).

The overall of the space, the half way of the space block the vision of the person inside.

The preparation of dry ice. I also concern about the way to breath. If it all closed, all the fog which is CO2 will diffuse inside the space and made people hard to breath and uncomfortable. Accidently, that day has a ventilation, most of the fog are blown away. So the floor are less fog than I experiment last time.

When the light off and the black light on, I feel satisfy with it because the black light can to produce strong light as other light do. But, thanks for the dry ice fog that created the movement of the light and make it more interesting.

When the time pass, the water of dry ice get cooler and stop producing fog. So the floor start show up again which I feel a bit worry about this situation because I do not have a chance to add more water.

During the critique, the first moment that people get into the space, it quite to be a bit late because the fog get lower. So the only thing left there is the painting fabric.

Reaction of the people who come in is so various. Aj. Taylor start to pass through the fabric while aj. Cheryl are interest in dry ice. Some of my friend play with the fog and the light. However, no one consider much about the painting fabric.

It is a wrong technique for hanging the fabric. It's wrinkled so it creates the shadow and let other know the depth. But there is one side that smoothly curve and created the endless as I want to.

The comments from Aj. is that I should cover all the space. If the vision inside are totally blocked and separated,  the space inside can be more effective. And also with the dry ice, it should be more inside so that it will help the space more tension. But for the feedback, the sound of the dry ice is as effective as I expect. Also with the fog curtain is much effective than I thought.

For myself, I feel a bit disappointed in my own that I cannot control the situation and create one that I expected but I feel satisfy at the same time for the rough day of my installation. It is a new experience for my to face a unexpected moment. I tried to create one, but at the same time I face one. I feel happy with this new experience.

I always thought the impression as an erotic all the time. But this project let me know and define erotic as an new experience. The experience that I want to know and try to kiss it. This erotic can happen everywhere. So I think I define my erotic as an enjoyment of specific moment.

Since I tried to play with the compression and the tension of the viewer. It is like I am using the space as set up space which it is already there. Cover the space with the fabric to control the light from inside and outside space. Then I blend the painting fabric into the ceiling of the space as a kissing and turn the low ceiling into the galaxy.

Since the dry ice need to use the water and I also need to use the electricity, I cover the light with the PVC sheet. And I also use the fabric to keep the fog as much as possible in side the space. The beehive cardboard is using for the elevate the bucket. The chair inside the space is the reaction of people to change the distance and view of space.

Operation

When the operation starts, the light will project to the ceiling and make the illuminated white color shining. The people outside cannot see the the ceiling unless that person goes inside the space. During that time, the fog of the dry ice will goes around the floor and made the floor vanish. The upper floor will release the fog to create the fog curtain which make the space cooler. Dry ice also create the bubble sound inside the silent space. All of those things will made the person focus the element inside the space and forget an outside by the endless space.

From the analyzing, I define my erotic as a IMPRESSION MOMENT. There should not be anything scared the viewer, but make it excited and invite the viewer to play the artwork. It is like a sexual desire that are consented by 2 people. Not a force with a fear.

Site

The low ceiling at 3rd floor.

This site is located on the long pathway. It has a special characteristic that the very high ceiling and very compressed ceiling are contrast in the same space. The feeling of changing in space can create some emotional to the one who walk pass through. So I think that it is going to be interesting if I can create some new experience in this contrasting space.

Experiment

The first idea come up with lighting

I created the light box that stimulate the light which includes white, warm which, yellow, red, green, blue, pink, black light. It can show the direct and indirect light at the same time. It separate into 2 type; one is black surface, another one is white surface.

So I made the survey to see which color made viewer the most comfortable and the most frustrated.

It comes out to be a warm white in white surface and black light in black surface. Most people said that warm white in white surface feels warm, and gentle while black light in black surface made people feel energetic and interested. So I choose black light to be my invitation.

The second idea is a script

I try to think the way to make the unexpected story under the compressing space. The coming up idea is to block the vision and hide the space. The curious of viewer can made the willing attempt of person higher and make them want to pass the space. And also with the way to block the vision, I choose to make it half way because it will be like a guild line to bow and cross the obstacle.

The idea that I choose is to make the space higher. It can be anything that make the space look deeper.

So I got an idea of the galaxy.. which is the unknown ending of space. So I use the galaxy and combine with the lighting to created the new space.

The way of lighting is can be either projected from the ground or ceiling. If it project from the ceiling I can make more tension to the viewer because the light is directly hit the ground. However, the depth of the ceiling will be gone because the light show the end of the space. So I choose the ground projection. The light that I choose and match with the galaxy concept is the black light in the dark space.

The black fabric with the illuminating white color painting can created the stimulated galaxy.

The third idea is dry ice

Dry ice can created the cold fog and also created the bubble sound at the same time. The property of dry ice's fog is the heaviness.It won't float to the air, but it will go down to the floor. So I use this strategy to created the wall of fog.

 Also with the ground floor fog. When the light hit the fog, it will be disposed and expanded by it property.

So the installation will be kissing to the ceiling of the space and invite the viewer to impress the new experience inside the compression space.
