Pat's proposal: Take a Bath

Site Research: This research focuses on contrast in Silom 20. Here, there are four culture reside together, which are Hindu, Islam, and Buddhist. When I first saw the site I was surprised because I didn't expect to see a Hindu temple, a mosque, a market together within Buddhist context. Two religious shrine are supposed to be quiet and peaceful, but once they are located near the market, the supposedly environment changes.

Left side of the street, there exist a market and a mosque
Right side of the street, a chosen shophouse and
 a new implemented program.

Take a Bath is a Japanese Bathhouse in Thai context which is placed inside 3 units of existing shophouse in Silom 20. I want to create an enclosed environment that contrast to the actual environment to create an unexpected moment once a person walk inside the shophouse.

The bathhouse focuses on water usage and how to create a cycle of water turing from clean water to grey water and back to clean water. The use of water give a clam, quiet, and relax senses, which are contrast to the outside environment.

1st floor is where lockers and an outdoor bath area. The place is separated into two zones, one is for male, the other is for female.

2nd floor is where indoor baths are located. The special thing about the 2nd floor is that water from bathtub will flow out of windows down to water pond and some of the bathtub outdoor to create a connection between the inside and outside and to express water looping cycle.

3rd floor is where a tea house is. The tea house is where people practice tea ceremony which is a a process of getting into a meditation while preparing tea. The place is to be even more quiet and calm.

Saan's proposal : "Cave Man Studio"

The Cave Man Studio

The confounding expectation that place with the space and design are my erotic definition. It has a lots of transition that change the expectation which is in the specific moment of time. The ordinary facade vs. curve structure space, small space vs. huge space, curvy structure vs. space on the curvy structure, close space vs. opening are the confounding expectation that happens in this shophouse. Also with the sound that come out to the neighborhood but cannot recognize where it is from because all the facade are the same. It is a tricky play that play with the expectation of human.

"Jan's" proposal: "The Unite Shop"

"To break the sacred is to play..."
What will happens when the two opposite programs are in the same place?
And how can these programs connected to each other?

Because to have a historical-reserved facade would considered to be sacred, while the programs
can be adjusted which considered to be profane.

The program of TATTOOING  would one that can be considered that have BOTH
sacred and profane in the same program

Sacred tattoo is what we called in Thai 'Yantra' tattoo - is something that needs religious practice
Profane tattoo is the normal tattoo that the designs depends on the person who wants

Since the exterior cannot be changed, then the only solution is the play with the interior.
The interior were designed in pattern to connect the two programs together. The use of the pattern is to
represents that tattoo can be connect to anywhere we wants which can unite all the patterns to flow in to each other.

Flow pattern that connect the programs together

FON's Propersal : SEXAY HOTEL

"Ningnong's" proposal: "See Saw Seen"

EROTICISM IS ALL ABOUT THE VISIBILITY, THE PROPERTIES
OF TRANSPARENCY AND TRANSLUCENCY.

The windows display the sequence of activities in both programs, house and restaurant
The core provides a space for circulation in restaurant part where people can see all the activities in both from residential

TRANSLUCENT GLASS WALL
Allow and block the visibility between two programs

Shop house and the site at Hua lampong

The main kitchen in restaurant with the big opening reveal the activities inside the kitchen to the outside.

Guntana's Proposal: HIDDEN

Site Analysis:
To continue with the previous projects, the research focuses on changes through time (day - night) at Thanon Chan - Sathu Pradit. It shows that in different time, the number of pedestrians on each side of the street is not equal. In daytime, the side with facades facing north is very crowded, due to the sunlight. While in nighttime, the another side becomes more crowded. The purpose of this project is to balance the site in order to bring out communities, which at last benefit the local people.

Library / Theatre:
On this site of the street, 2 shophouses are modified to be a library in daytime, lighting are used for decoration in order to attract people's attention and bring them to the space. While at night, the facade will be full opened and become a theatre for the customer to come take a seat and enjoy an open-air movie, being projected on the screen across the street.

Restaurant / Residence:
2 shophouses are modified to be a restaurant on the 1st floor. The main features on this building is a big transformable facades that when it is closed, it will be just a normal shutter, but then when it is opened, it will become a shading device with a pattern to create unique shadow underneath. The upper floor is a flying garden and living space. The vegetables grown in the garden can be used for cooking in the restaurant down stair. The projector on the 3rd floor projects movies to the transformable screen on the facade at night for the customers on the other side of the street.

jean's proposal : a pleasant journey

As people walking into the shophouse,Each room provide contrast, different color or different materials.People will experimenting the space step by step.Their are things that distract and gets the people's attention which is 1.the contrast view ( when room have contrast color, walking from one to another creates the contrast of eye) 2.the material ( the material that makes people want to touch and when they touch it,its creates a feeling and thought. these all above makes people focus, concentrate on the thing in front of them and forget about their destination. I define experiencing the architecture as a journey and adding erotic into architecture means adding pleasure to the journey and also change the meaning of one space. The erotic ornament that I add into the shophouse distract the purpose that people have through the architecture, Make them focus on each ornament along their architectural journey rather than their destination in the shophouse.I can sum up the explanation that ornament of erotic makes people forget about their purpose or destination that they have through the architecture.Adding erotic ornament in my term is adding forms, textures, materials, contrasts and illusion into the architecture or I can say adding something that creates sense, feeling, thought and contrast which makes people turn to focus on each ornaments. This is the whole idea of what erotic in architecture is for.

Jan's Site Research: "Thanon Kao San"

DIAGRAM: Thanon Kao San Site AnalysisThe Erotic Field: Thanon Kao San

Khaosan Road or Khao Sarn Road (Thai: ถนนข้าวสาร) is a short street in central Bangkok, Thailand. It is located in the Banglamphu area of (Phra Nakorn district) about 1 km north of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. The site are combined with many generations of shophouse such as the historical reserved from the past, or the new shophouse that can be seen everywhere now a day. The aim of studying this site analysis was to use the relationship between the two opposite elements that found in the site which are 'sacred' or something dedicated to a religious purpose and so deserving veneration,in this case is the area of the temple  of Boroniwed, contrasting to 'profane' or the behaviour that not paying respectful of religious practice, which is the area of clubs and bars in the opposite direction. This relations between two elements will create the powerful erotic interaction between each other.

The diagram shows the location of the 'sacred' and 'profane' area where the blue is the profane area such as clubs and bars while the yellow represents the sacred area which is the temple. the green is the 'in between' between the sacred and profane which is the semi sacred where the facade of the shophouse is historical reserved but the programs is flexible due to the time which is profane.

The diagram shows the frequency of population in the site during day time and night time where during the daytime people seems to gather around the area contrasting to night time where the only place that people gathered is the profane area.

The diagram shows the programs that can be found within the site during the day and to see the relationship between them.

The diagram shows the section of the shophouse and the program at the choosing building which is the 'Swensense' where it was in between the two opposite elements.

This diagram shows sections of the different purposes of coming to the site between foreigners and local people where they go to the temple with different purpose but the same at night at Kao San Road.

The Program

The program that i use to do is the crossing between sacred and profane where in one building combines between two forbiddingly opposite programs in order to create the erotic feelings towards the buildings.
