Nat Shophouse Research "User and Transformation"

The research of the shophouse is based on the Southern Chinese eclectic style during the 1840's to the 1900's. The physical appearance is 2 storeys with a simple facade. The building material are very simple materials that are easy to acquire, which are timber, clay brick and lime. This shophouse is located in Penang, Malaysia called the Ah Tong Tailor and due to my own father being a malaysian and I had spent some years in Penang mostly during my childhood years so this is why I chose this one over the Thai. The Thai typlologies are very much more simplified version of the more older shophouse that it had derived from so I thought it would be more interesting to look at back more of the origin of the shophouse.

Besides exploring only the typologies of the shophouses, this research then also explore a small part in the user and the transformation of space inside the shophouse. The exterior of the shophouse remains unchange whilst this research tries to explore more of the interior. So by introducing different types of users, the space then would change according to those users, exploring different types of transformation from less to more radical change.
