"Jane" installation development: "Can't get over you.."

Can't get over you...

For me Erotic mean something that you are addicted to, eventhough it hurting you but still it somehow make you feel good. It can be drugs, alcohol, or love. Some kind of love is painful but sometime you prefer to stay with it. So "Can't get over you..." is a project that talking about a love story. I seriouly were inspired by Sophie Calle. So the first thing that i did is asking people to response a my story.

After I listen to my friend response, I feel like hopeless and hopeful in the same time. I want to make something that will remind me what to do and what to become. So I came out with the story of love. Not a happy ending type but still touching. I don't want to say this is sad story, maybe there isn't a ending to this story. In the end it will give you a question mark, a question, how do you feel? Do you feel sad to be like this? Can you accept it? Or you want to get over it...?For some people, stop love might not be as easy as to be in pain. Some choose to hold on, keeping the feeling eventhough the one is gone...

So what I will do for the installation is to bring both idea from Sophie and Tokujin. For Sophie is to bring people into her story, while Tokujin is letting the person walk into space.

This diagram show the different way that people can read a story. It can be as simple as watching, I think this one even give you more the idea of what you are reading because you can see the image and sound in the same time. Reading a book is also another way that allow you to imagine more. Sometime people prefer reading a novel rather than watching movie, because reading allow you to imagine more, for example:  a character and the scene. For more, listening is another one that I think have the same idea of reading, because it also allow you to imagine.

This diagram show the different way of how you can play with space. Changing its proportion, interior, sound, light, and color can give you different perception. For example, narrow and wide space can give you completely different perception.

So I will combine these two technique together, which is let the person listen and walk into the space in the same time.

Location: The stair near the print store - from the first floor to third, in front of the INDA meeting room.

There are so many advantage in this area. First of all is the strong pink color on the wall, which at first I think it going to look nice with the spotlight on it. After I choose the site, I took a couple time to walk up and down the stair, and I think it can be a good place where I can install thing in it. For my project I want people to go into space and get the perception of what I want them to feel. so I need a space where people can move around the site.

1.........Finally, today is the day you’ve been waiting for. Our 7th anniversary. You’re here every year, on the same table, sit in the same chair, with his favorite meal. He will always be here not later than 8 pm, he is probably very tired today. Hope that this special meal will make his day. Oh, you should be ready with his present too. Last night you wrapped it and put in on the table on the second floor. Maybe you should bring them down, and get ready.

2…….. Outside the window pane you can see the panoramic view of the garden. Last year, right there, you were there with him, laying around on the mattress above the green grass. Yes, it certainly was a warm day, but a breezy day. He popped a can of soda and spilled it onto the grass. You jokingly said that's a wrong way to water the garden, and he laughed. Oh you should not forgot about his present on the second floor.

3……...Do you remember? The day that you and him painted the entire wall in pink. We’re so in love. This is the tallest part of the house, the high ceiling makes it possible to set that huge Christmas tree there, right beneath the chandelier. You used to decorate it together, and he will hold you up so you can put that silver star on top of the christmas tree. Underneath it is the present boxes, which made it almost unbearable to wait for Christmas so you can finally unwrap the surprise. You smiled, and decided to wear that necklace from him again today.

4……. Keep on walking up, it should be near here. What time is it now? Oh it already, 9pm he should be here by now, did something happen to him? After you got his present, you should try to call him, to see if he is okay.

5…….   It should be next to that picture frame, next to the corner. It was the picture of your birthday. Look at his smile, look at your smile. And that doll he gave you. The cute little teddy bear, you can no longer sleep alone after it.

…… Yeah, it’s here, you found his present

……    Can you hear that sound behind you? It's from the television. Probably from your bedroom, where you forgot to turn it off last night. Why don't you turn around and go up to your bedroom so you can turn that thing off?

6….. The remote should be on your bed..

….. So how do you feel?

  1. The relation of the site to the generated narrative is very clear, making the installation site-specific in a very unexpected way. I think it is very interesting the way the choice of site was affected by the piece you had in mind but once the site was chosen, the narrative was adapted to take full advantage of the site characteristics. You shouldn't abandon this method of working back and forth between your idea and the site, letting both transform each other, since it make the intervention very strong and relevant.
Clear site documentation (drawings and measurements) should have been included also in this part, so that the photographs can be related to each other in a sequence and details of the site can be described.
