Process and Development

Eroticism is an emotional impact when the obvious becomes obscure. When something is hidden or forbidden to be seen the more you think and focus on that certain object. The less one sees, the more interesting it gets, the more naughty it is. An example to my statement is an 2 image of a naked female body. One photo showing all body parts, exposing all there is and the other photo a censored parts. A short glimpse at the exposed photo is acceptable but the longer you stare at the expose photo, the lesser attention you pay, you’ve seen it all, no more excitement is left to be reveal.

Censoring aims to cover up the forbidden part of something. Instead, censoring actually emphasizes the forbidden parts and makes it more appealing, more intriguing.

See, what censor can alter the picture.

Kendo's documentation and post-analysis on "Perception"

Due to the power cut that occurred during the presentation, it affected the visibility of my installation and caused lack of light. Nevertheless, The presentation was still carried on with help from hand held flashlight.

My interpretation of "erotic" is the act of integrating a subject to another in the way that trigger your senses to outshine. The senses in this case consist of touching, seeing, tasting, knowing, hearing and smelling, which our normal daily lives may have us forgetting to notice what senses we have experienced. Therefore the intention of my installation is initially to have people engage in a scenario to become part of the installation, temporarily forgetting their daily lives. Secondly, reducing the ability to do a certain activity with created limitations to certain senses, in this case, seeing, which makes the users even more involved and attentive to their senses. This resembles my interpretation of erotic in integrating a subject to another. Ultimately, this installation is named "perception" as it allows users to perceive the norm differently, as the instructors were unexpectedly made to be in a dating dinner scenario and having them interact with each other as if romantically but in an abnormal way.

The installation is the medium that impacts users directly resembling how the studied term “erotic architecture” impacts their users.

Pink's installation drawings: COULD IT

AXONOMETRIC

The axonometric representing separated colors to identify which spot is for. First at the pink star we encounter with the stairs to walk up to the other floors. As we are walking the installation itself is hanging in the middle and we actually see it from the first floor but if we walk to other floor we would see different shapes of cloudsthat represent the image of bull, fish, human face, etc.

HOW TO MAKE?

Little cloud shapes

Big cloud

INTENDED EFFECT

The installations intend to let imagination of visitors to have freedom in shaping the clouds. Which when they see the clouds, there are so many forms of them that they would be guessing what the shapes are. This installation is to reflect human's mind that they would imagine anything they could by different of experiences they have met.

Break the Rule: You can, Can you?

“Life is short, Break the Rules.
Forgive quickly, Kiss SLOWLY.
Love truly. Laugh uncontrollably
And never regret ANYTHING
That makes you smile.”

Mark Twain

Why people keep following the rule? What if you try to break it once? This is because we all have our own believes but mostly of them we did not experience by itself but overheard it as a second hand knowledge.

As the same as the letter 'สธ' (SOR TOR) at the front gate at Faculty of Architecture which Architecture students believed that if we step on it we will not graduate. Does it really true? Have you know a person that step on it and not graduated? I am not disparaging or anything. However, I am telling you that most of us do not experience by ourself but overheard form seniors and its just gone in our head. Moreover, Thai people also believed that we should not step on any letters or words. As if as we know that we should not step on Sor Tor, when we see people step on it. Somehow, it creates a feeling of uncomfortable and unaware. Feeling emotionally towards it showing erotically that how people can be conveyed the feelings and express its emotional.

AXONOMETRIC VIEW

SET UP

This Axonometric view shows how the field was set in the site. I placed it in front of the statue of Ajarn to create the atmosphere like he is looking to us
Axonometric view of a pattern

Section of installation on site
The pattern of the letters overlapping creates another pattern to the tile which it can be seen as an illusion because the more overlapping the letter, the harder to recognise

INTENDED EFFECT

The diagram shows the possible feelings to the letter. The further, the safer. The nearer, the more concern.

The site itself looks very spiritual and sacred to us, Architecture students. Since there was a believe in which if we step on the letter in front of the statue, we will not be able to graduate. I want to experience on how different people perceive differently and express with different emotional expressions and feelings. I want to investigate the first feeling that they are on what they respected but not a normal feeling that they have before. In other words, I want them to have fun to not graduated.

The site does matter because it was already sacred itself because it was the placement of the statue that we worship. My installation will use the believe to change the emotion to the opposite towards the letters that we tends to believed. Not in a forceful way but make them experience intensionally. Will u dare to do?

MATERIAL EFFECT

One thing to considered is the material used in the installation which is woollen fabric which give audience the texture just like soccer field.

Jan's installation development: You can, Can you?

DEVELOPMENT 1: IDEA CONCEPT

Kissing Architecture

Kissing architecture is when two things interact with each other and create another relationship. My ingredients would be the installation together with our believe of cannot step on Sor Tor

CONCEPT: DARE TO DO THE OPPOSITE

DEVELOPMENT 2: IDEA CONCEPT

1st idea: playing with people's mind

changing the scale of the letters and make it another Thai letter 'ภ' because it looks similar which might effect people's mind so if they actually step on it they will not feel guilty after they recognise.

Inspiration

Crossing Emotional

The installation will used the idea of crossing emotional to defined what is Erotic.
The  idea of how different spaces creates different atmosphere and different feelings.

DEVELOPMENT 5: GATHERING IDEA

Designing

The final idea is to combine what people seems to have a 'fun' reaction and interacting to it which is the soccer field covered on what make people 'beware of' not to be near. In order to change people's perception from respect to having fun.

To make it clear, the concept of the installation is to turn a beware reaction into a fun reaction but using the letter that we believed in and respected it to create a soccer pitch. Audience will not recognise if there are many letters overlapping. The hypothesis of this observation is that they will notice where is the real Sor Tor. However, the floor that they step on it actually the letter that they believed in as well.

The conclusion is that what matter to them is the LETTER not anything

What will be their reaction if the floor that they step on is Sor Tor?

Ong's documentation and post-analysis

This project, Passionate bin, is designed for the concept of erotic. The installation took place at the main entrance of the faculty of architecture, which is a public space that everyone have to walk through it before entering the faculty. This free space haven't used for any purpose, so I decide to choose this site for my presentation. While the project was being install, people began to notice that there must be something happen here. They tried to walk, look around and figure it out what is going on. Some people climb to a high place to see from the high angle. It seems like they still have no idea, thus they began to wait. After the installation is done, I present my passionate bin by calling everyone to surround my work and send them an empty bottle to throw in that bin. The pattern of the bin, which is made from the transparent material with black curve line, attract their sight, and increase their incentive to throw the bottle. Those bottle flew away in the air, and going to the bin by those transparent plastic pipe. When the illustration is done, I explain to them about my concept that normally when talking about a bin, people try to get away from it as far as possible. It contains lots of unclean stuff, which made them not willing to get closer. On the other hand, this bin is different by looking from those reaction of people. They feel appreciated to get closer and throw those trashes into it.

Personally, defining erotic art is difficult, because there's no certain meaning about this word. In my opinion, I think erotic is something that can create a feeling of passion, which can persuade people mind to do something even they are not in the mood of doing that thing. According to my project, this passionate bin can achieve in what I've said about erotic concept. It attract people in many sense, for example hearing and sight, which is from the see through matter, when the bottle is rolling on the pipe, black curve line on itself or even the layers of shadow that the line create when catching with the light. As for me, this is what I think erotic is and this work can make people desire to put trashes to somewhere they belong.
