Human Observation

BTS Sky Train: I look into how people approach one another in a small space like the BTS. It is very interesting to see the reaction of many stranger forcing to be in the small space together for quite some time. People don't look face to face to other people they don't know. Their back plays a big role for protecting themselves from others. People try to protect themselves as much as they can.

Back and shoulders are use for protection and to create boundary for themselves.

The more recognized people you have, the more confident you will be. Not only in the BTS, but for almost every place. In BTS, it's clearly show that if you come in a group you seem to act more natural and some are bold enough to act stupid.

Personal space is obviously different from each other.

Intense Field: This is at Amarin Tower, in the center of the tower was empty. People seem to avoid walking through that space. Other will clearly see you if you walk pass that area. So people get to the side, to avoid being stare from others. It feels like everyone's eyes are on you when you're at the center and you want to get away from that area. But if we put some thing in the middle, like a statue, sculpture etc. I think it will automatically solve this problem.

This happens in school cafeteria and street restaurant. People don't sit face to face if they don't know each other. They use chair to act like a wall to create boundary, to make their own space.

In this site, people are able to avoid one another. Two people can sit there for a long time without interacting to each other. One can ignore the other completely. People who use this space doesn't seem to appreciate the space.

CURTAIN & RAIL

So I came up with the idea of changing the atmosphere of the site. To make a curtain to cover the space to make a new space.

Instead of using the plastic pipe, I use a metal pipe for more strength and better looking reason. I designed these various type of curtain rail for the shop to make it for me, but some can't be made. There're limitation in this kind of pipe. At last it came out with one last design that I can put 2 layers of curtain on it.

The rail is 250cm high. The base is 200cm and it has another 60cm rail extended each side so that people can enter the space from both side.

These are kind of hanging for the curtain.

TEA

I did not just only add the curtain to create this new atmosphere. I also add in a little tea time to help people interact with each other. Chinese tea is something quite complicated to make. It takes time. While making the tea and enjoy the tea, people can slowly absorb the space.

  1. All the aspects that you touched upon during the research were of great interest and I strongly appreciate the depth in which all of them were explored. I believe you greatly benefitted from side research on human behaviour and interaction that allowed you to provide a very rich overview of hypothetical interaction cases for your piece. Please keep this in mind for future projects - any topic of interest should be a matter of research.
I aslo strongly appreciate the thorough planning and detailing of the piece, which in your case - and in every case - is key in order to achieve the experiential value that the piece is intended to have. Very good job on this.
